The 1st Wah Yan International Conference (Hong Kong, 1988) – “Wah Yan Family Around The World”

Recap

Under the theme “Wah Yan Family Around The World,” the first Wah Yan International Conference was held on December 19 and 20, 1988 in Hong Kong. A total of 28 participants from eight past student/alumni association took part.

Other than the usual round of dinner parties, there were visits to the premises of the two Colleges in Hong Kong and Kowloon. The highlight was the Conference jointly chaired by William Yeung and Alfred Lam, Chairmen of Past Students Associations of Hong Kong and Kowloon at our College.

The Conference discussed reports from each association, constitution and bylaws, council structures, services, communication network, future expansion, international Jesuit schools alumni conference (1991 in Spain). There was a lively debate on whether various chapters should adopt a unified name. The American term “Alumni” was proposed. The Conference recommended it to any Chapter which preferred this Latin form. However, your Association has decided to stick with its own. Among the issues discussed at the Conference, it was generally agreed that

1. all associations should be incorporated and have their own constitutions and by-laws;
2. overseas associations will continue to provide advice and assistance to Wah Yan alumni migrating to those overseas countries;
3. a formal international set-up should be established for strengthening international ties and an international directory should be published from time to time; and
4. different associations may use a name of their choice as appropriate to their own history and local culture.
