The 2nd Wah Yan International Conference (Vancouver, 1990) – “Unity is Strength”

Recap

The second Wah Yan International Conference was successfully held in Vancouver from August 23–25, 1990, attended by more than 100 participants from ten associations from Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. Participants included the Father Superior of the Jesuit Order in Hong Kong and the Headmasters of both Wah Yan's and graduates spreading from those of the pre-war era to 1990 graduates.

The key issues discussed and resolved at the conference included the following:

  1. International networking should be strengthened with each association assigning an international liaison person.
  2. Without yet a formal international secretariat, Hong Kong should take up its role with the task of publishing and circulating an international newsletter.
  3. More attention should be directed in utilizing the resources of recent graduates as young members in developing alumni work.

The highlights of the conference included

  1. a family mass;
  2. a ball attended by some 600 members and guests; and
  3. the planting of a maple tree in a park in commemoration of the conference and as a symbol of Wah Yan alumni who have settled in Vancouver taking root there.

Postscript

Following the decision at the 2nd International Conference that Hong Kong would become the centre of international communication between all WYPSA branches, an International Networking Committee has been formed to strengthen the communication system among all WYPSA branches, to establish new branches wherever possible and to assist the functioning of any branch when necessary. The first meeting was on November 26, 1990 to set objectives and to plan programs. The Committee consists of Philip Ching (chairman), Luke Wong (secretary), Kenneth Chong, Peter Hall, Peter Ho, Hugo Hung, Francis Lee, Patrick Wu and Frank Miu.

The Committee has planned an International Gathering called “Merry International” for young members around Christmas. Overseas Wahyanites coming back for their holidays will be invited.

The website of International Networking Committee is online at http://inc.wahyan.com/.
