The 4th Wah Yan International Conference (San Francisco, 1994) – “Towards a Global Wah Yan Community”

Background (Conference Theme)

by Godfrey Lam (WYHK 86)

Seven years ago, I was privileged enough to be able to visit our Vancouver Chapter as Student Ambassador. Since then, successive “ambassadorial” trips have been organized to various overseas chapters. Contacts and exchanges between fellow past, students local and abroad have grown considerably, as have the size of many a chapter, so much so that it is now felt appropriate to entitle this year's International Conference “Towards a Global Wah Yan Community.” Each chapter is of course an independent body with its own structure and mode of operation. In recent years. the linkage and intercourse between all of them have created a great deal of activities including the International Conference, the International Newsletter and the setting up of the International Networking Committee, resulting in a closer relationship between past students in different countries than was hitherto obtained. Lest it be thought that “ambassadors” are antipathetic to unification because it makes their office redundant, I believe it would be a laudable object to work to continue to enhance the association internationally. The good work that San Francisco has undertaken this year deserves much appreciation. While we pride ourselves as a community with international presence and marked by great affection for our Alma Mater, what is also important to our community is a continued dedication to Hong Kong, where we received our education and with which Wah Yan is inextricably connected. Such concern and support is the lifeblood of our organic community with its unmistakable heritage. In the years to come, both Wah Yan and Hong Kong will be faced with many challenges; it is time to renew our pledge of support for them as we profess the aim of developing into a global community. Held three years before 1997, this Conference is an invaluable opportunity for one to take stock of the achievements of our school and Hong Kong, and how we have benefited from these places. We will do well to remember in this 75th year of Wah Yan Hong Kong and 70th year of Wah Yan Kowloon what our common root is, and from there take the meaningful step of proceeding towards a global community of Wah Yanites.
